PROFILE OF ECWA GUEST HOUSE, SOKOTO

Based on the information from the SIM international archive, in 1942, the re-roofing of the house was carried out for the second time the same year by the missionaries. On October 13th, 1950, Miss Pryer was filling in the Guest House, and later in 1951, Rev. and Mrs. George were appointed to assume the responsibilities of the Guest House and station work. In 1955, Mr. and Mrs. Braband took over the work of the bookshop and Guest House. Therefore, it was not clearly stated when and how the establishment of the old Guest House in Sokoto came to being, but it can be traced back to the early 1940s.

The Guest House during that time served the following purposes:

  1. Used as a place for people to be lodged to sit for language exams
  2. Used for business trips and as a transition home
  3. On several occasions, the sick found it beneficial to stay there for a week or more to rest/relax before going to their destinations

In 1967, the Guest House was renovated into a residence and converted to residential usage.

A new structure was acquired in 2007 by ECWA, replacing the previous Guest House at a different location in the city. It was acquired from Engineer and Mrs. Michael Babatunde Ayeni, a businessman involved in borehole construction and metal fabrication.

Location:
No. 19 Denge Road, Mabera Layout, Kantin Sani Area, Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State.

The intention to sell the property was mentioned to Elder Simon Nyam and members of the Local Church Board (LCB) Mabera. Many people showed interest, but Mr. Ayeni chose to sell to Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) because of his commitment to the Church.

The LCB, through Rev. Anmadu Mamman, approached the Sokoto District Church Council (DCC) for a loan, but funds were unavailable. The DCC leadership consulted Dr. Garba, an ECWA trustee and Chairman of ECWA Staff Investment Scheme (ESIS), for guidance.

He advised them to meet the Guest Houses Coordinator, Mrs. Juliana Dagwa, who supported the vision. A delegation assessed the property and approval was granted.

Funding details:

  • ESIS loan: ₦10,000,000

  • Total purchase cost: ₦12,000,000
